Why use a dermatopathologist?
A dermatopathologist is a specialist in diagnosing skin biopsies under the microscope. Both pathologists and dermatologists may apply for certification. Dermatologists must complete additional surgical pathology training while pathologists must complete clinical dermatology training. In addition, dermatopathologists must also receive formal training in an accredited fellowship training program for at least one year. Upon completion, eligible candidates may take the board examinations given by both the American Boards of Dermatology and Pathology.
Board certification in dermatopathology qualifies the physician specialists as a designated expert in the diagnosis of skin diseases. These physicians integrate the clinical information with microscopic observations of the biopsy from the patient to provide diagnostic information to the treating physicians. Dermatopathology is a consultative service to the referring dermatologist and not simply a laboratory test. The accurate microscopic interpretation of the biopsy is important in the selection of appropriate therapies by your dermatologist.
At the Dermatology Center of Plano, we send your specimens to a local dermatopathology laboratory unless this is restricted by your health insurance plan. We want to assure that you receive the best possible interpretation of your biopsy.
We usually receive your dermatopathology report within 48 hours unless additional tests were ordered by the dermatopathologist.
